I have always been fascinated with games that have several wandering and independent NPCs, especially when you have the ability to try to order them around. This sets the stage for a game where no one session is like any other, and even though the NPCs may not be very smart, it gives a sense of life to the game.
I am looking for your recommendations of good games of this kind. (Or just fascinating ones.)

Milliways: the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, by Max Fog 1 vote "Multiple wandering NPCs" [+]"Multiple wandering NPCs: The first-class idiot constantly walks to the car park and to the first class area until knocked out. The morpher captain technically wanders (and is coded to move around by themself), but you never see them moving as they only move when not in the same room, and then hide. There are some waiters who are mentioned as moving through the restaurant but you can't ever interact with them. Marvin follows you in the first area. Forbidden Castle, by Mercer Mayer 1 vote "This can be..." [+]"This can be awkward since NPCs can pick up items you need and MIGHT trade them with you (if you're nice to them). And the game punishes you (at the end) if you kill any of them. There is a king, mankin, and faerie who wander, a rideable boat, dragon, pegasus, and bridge you can "ride" (yes the bridge wanders up and down- drawbridge), there is a talking frog, raven, wizard, and griffin who do not wander; a bear, outlaws, scorpions, and bugs who act as barriers, and a wandering ogre who is more of a problem than anything else, but certain game events can render him nice and somewhat orderable." Enchanter, by Marc Blank, Dave Lebling 1 vote "The adventurer...." [+]"The adventurer. There is a turtle you can order around, but it doesn't wander. The adventurer can somewhat be ordered around. There are also cultists that wander "in and out" of a few rooms that you need to protect yourself from. Also the great terror walks towards the exit and you must still trap him inside the maze, but I don't know if that counts as wandering. " ( Fredrik says: Like Zork I, I have the feeling that there is only the one wandering NPC. Thus, while it is a brilliant game, it does not really belong here. ![]() | |
