absurd, powerful and very short, October 27, 2023

Despite its short length, it manages to be a lot of things: confusing, off-putting, charming, funny and sad. The refusal to meet audience expectations (in this case, about both the English language and the form of a Twine game) creates a kind of vulnerability and openness that sets up well for the more serious content toward the end.

It's more mental work for the reader/player too, and sometimes that can be tiring, but in this case the game is literally about 5 minutes long and gets where it's going quite efficiently. Just use the back button with abandon.

A treasure-hunt for content. An award-winning Twine game., February 3, 2016

Rat Chaos's opening is purposely bad. You are in a position of authority over an area, with the option to summon rats or not.

The game is goofy and fun at first. But the 'real' content takes some searching to find. In the end, Rat Chaos has a powerful, visceral message.

It's hard to say too much more about it without spoiling it.

As of Septembet 2015, the link no longer functions, but I found someone on an IF forum willing to share a copy.

Rat Chaos is the funniest Twine game I’ve ever played, and the most human.

...Rat Chaos explores the idea of surface agency as a distraction; the notion that solving the more obvious problems might be a way to shut someone up, to avoid listening to the deeper things they have to say.

Best games you've played in 2012 by Molly
The year of our lord Two Thousand Twelve is almost over, so let's reflect back on the games we've played this year and see which ones we liked the most. Note that the games don't have to have come out in 2012 to be eligible for this...

For Your Consideration: Games from 2012 that should be nominated for the XYZZY Awards by Molly
There were a lot of great games released in the past year, and now that the XYZZYs are coming up, it seems like a very good idea to take a poll of all the games from last year people would like to see nominated. The management has asked...
