A short piece, in which you have a conversation and then make a choice. It was created in two weeks as an entry to the first Indie Horror Jam, run in July of 2021, where it placed joint 3rd.
This game contains adult language, descriptions of violence, and brief references to addiction.
It works properly when run in Chrome and Safari. It may not work properly if run in Firefox. I recommend playing it fullscreen, with headphones in.
It has two endings, and takes about 15 minutes to complete once through.

As a bit of background: I discovered this game via Tabitha's "Games Seeking Reviews" poll. I'm grateful for this initiative!
"Kiss of Beth" is a short horror story in Twine. There are optional conversation nodes and at least one momentous choice. Navigation is easy, and the interface and prose work together effectively. The beginning is gently ominous, dramatizing a chat with an acquaintance who has come to take the protagonist's roommate, Beth, on a date. While I won't give anything away, I'll say that the pace at which details unfold is well-calibrated, and I was eager to discover the true nature of this encounter.
There is also an interesting meta-comment about "good" endings, which left me with a few satisfying thoughts to mull over afterward.
TL:DR:
A short, 15-minute twine experience with a nice bit of initially understated horror. More than worth the time.
+ The visual and auditory presentation is more interesting than it first appears, evoking specific vibes from classic adventure games.
+ A bite-sized snack; both endings can be explored in a short amount of time. It's like a good short story.
+ Satisfyingly unpleasant.
- No notes! This kind of short, focused Twine experience is my jam.

Y’know how some games are emerald-cut jewels of insight into some aspect of creation? That touch on universal themes and leverage interactivity to deliver that insight to the player like a thunderbolt? That instantly spark a spiraling sea of contemplations, revelations and powerful proximity to Larger Truths? That compel reviewers to hammer out page after page of analysis and exploration, as much desperately trying to grapple with the feelings the work elicited as informing potential audiences?
Wouldn’t it be EXHAUSTING if every IF work was like that??? Like, just fatiguing beyond all measure.
KoB is, thankfully, not that. It is another one-conceit Jam that slyly slips in a second conceit on replay. It feels graphically a little hastier than some. Textually, a little deeper than others. It is a pre-date screening by a helpful roommate that tests the player’s empathy a bit (I’m gonna say up to the line, but not hitting ‘manipulatively so’), then delivers some quick horror. In a game this small, that feels spoilery, but the game’s own descriptions basically confirm this, so I’m good.
I’m a horror guy, so my bar was not very high for this thing. I liked it for what it was. I really liked that it bucked a strong feline subculture in IF to SHOWCASE A DOG (who’s a good girl??). I liked it better on replay, when going for a different ending which really drove home the horror. Hard to imagine you won’t like those things too.
Except for, well you know who you are. :cat:
This game has you play the friend of the eponymous Beth, whose date has arrived. It’s your job to size this guy up. The game has music and graphics, starting with a black and white picture of the date that is slowly colored in, which was a really neat mechanic.
I was emotionally invested in the conversation. The date guy seemed kind of lame at first but I grew to respect him more. The ending I got when I chose to let him up surprised me quite a bit, but I ended up accepting it in the end.
There is some profanity in the game. Overall I was impressed by the presentation and the writing.
Through the Shattered Lens
With the exception of the final few moments of the game, Kiss of Beth is a conversation simulator. At the start of the game, it seems like you are just being an overprotective friend but, as things progress, it becomes obvious that there is more to your relationship with Beth than just friendship.
