| Beyond Zork, by Brian Moriarty 2 votes "Many would argue ..." [+]"Many would argue ...: ... that it's some kind of devil-hybrid between the Enchanters and Zorks, etc, and that's not untrue. But it's the Zork title I play, and replay, and replay, and replay, and never stop marveling over." ( Vote for this game | |
| Zork II, by Dave Lebling, Marc Blank 2 votes "Just right" [+]"Just right: The Goldilocks median of the original trilogy. Its large-scale map features and non-local puzzles save it from seeming as cursory and arbitrary as Zork 1, but it doesn't try to fit everything into an overarching plot the way Zork 3 did." --baf... "i just love..." [+]"i just love running around with the wand fluorescing things for some reason. " ( Vote for this game | |
| Zork Zero: The Revenge of Megaboz, by Steve Meretzky 1 vote "The ultimate distillation of the flathead empire" [+]"The ultimate distillation of the flathead empire: A lot of the Zork games are almost plotless (with the possible but limited exception of Zork III). You need to run around and gather a bunch of items, but the items appear rather randomly. You wave your wand a bunch of times, but there is no sense as to why Flood Control Dam #3 happens to be there near the maze of twisty little passages. In some sense Zork Zero is similar, but unlike the others, being set in the distant past, it can explain the universe, while celebrating it. The lives of the twelve flatheads are integral to the game, and learning to play Double Fanucci is a joy. It has all of the strengths of the previous Zork games, but it feels like it has a real sense of place in the flathead empire that is missing in many of the other Zorks." --Mikalye...
