A need for Beta, November 22, 2010
by tggdan3 (Michigan)

You are a man. You are nude. You wish to find a place where naked people can live. Off you go on your adventure.

The premise seems simple enough. The game is very short, the puzzles are fairly easy. I solved the game in 33 moves on the first try. The puzzles are very hinted, but I don't want to give too much away.

The game could have been better tested. You find a sausage:
>EAT SAUSAGE
That's plainly inedible.

Also there's an ocean.
>ENTER OCEAN
That's not something you can enter.
>GO NORTH
You head into the water...

These are just small polishing items that would have been easily caught in the testing phase.

As far as the writing, some of it is kind of funny.
"You're on a beach. It's very sandy where you're standing. To the north it becomes more watery, mainly thanks to the ocean."

I didn't see any dinosaurs, but I did find cerberus.

As far as this being inspired by a true story... I find that a little hard to believe, unless he wandered a city naked.

It's a short game, like I said, 33 moves. Don't expect anything crazy, and it doesn't seem to quite be AIF or anything (you aren't exactly fully implemented either). Seems like a starter game for a I7 programmer, and I'd be interested in seeing what else he comes up with once he learns the system a little more.

Thanks for the review! It was indeed my first game, created to learn the language and also to be a reference point for future titles (I've only made one other title so far, but it was a gift for a friend so never publicly released).

It was tested, but I guess a few things were missed. I fixed the things you mentioned and uploaded a new version. I know of a bug I can't figure out how to fix, but it's more of a glitch and not too much of an issue.

And the dinosaurs are in plain view on Kelly Street!

Must have missed the dinos. (Dang skimming habit!). What's the bug problem- might be able to help?

The group of people (nuns, police man) appear in the final area when the player is in Kelly Street for a couple turns, and then move towards the beach with each turn. If the player is caught in the same location as them, it leads to a game over. The player is supposed to hide in the bush to avoid this. However, if the player moves while the group moves - for example if I move north while the group moves south - the player will bypass them even though in reality they should bump into each other and lead to a game over. I could never figure out a way to make it work corretly.

You would have to make the character move before the group.

Steps
1) Character Moves
2) If character and people are in same spot- event occurs
3) Group moves
4) if character and people are in same spot- event occurs.

I think in game terms:

Definition: a room is grouped if it encloses THE GROUP [people]
Before going to a grouped room:
[game over event].

Every Turn:
[perform group move]
if the player is in a grouped room
[perform game over event]

Does this work?

Ah yes, that seemed to work! Thank you very much, now I consider the game finished.

Oh, one more thing... when the player types "swim" the game assumes you want to swim in the duffel bag rather than the ocean. Can I control which object is the default one? That's the only other problem I had with this game.

Thanks again for the help earlier!

Does the player mean swimming in the ocean: it is very likely.
Does the player mean swimming in the duffel bag: it is unlikely.

-OR-
Rule for supplying a missing noun when swimming:
if the player is in the beach, now the noun is the ocean.

Ah, simple enough. Thanks again!
