Nominee, Best NPCs - 1998 XYZZY Awards
Guilty Bastards is a pleasant ride in which the goal is to solve the game, not connect on a personal level with the situations and characters. No special insight or puzzle-solving skills are needed to reach the solution, and some of the hints hold back just enough to at least let you make the final logical connection. The murder plot and the ending of the game are extremely Hollywood, but hey, that's what you signed on for.

In this mid-length game, you play a detective investigating the murder of a movies star.
Most of the game involves driving to various locations, getting out, looking around, and talking to people. It's generally pretty clear what to talk about for the first half. In the last half, you have to start solving puzzles, and it gets down into 'guess what the author is thinking' territory.
The NPCs have a variety of topics, and some can follow you, and they can lie, bluff, react to various things, etc.
Recommended for detective story fans.

An evil nobleman, a kidnapped daughter and a father who wants to rescue her at any cost--that is not the way life works. Something much darker, something much more human, lies underneath.

You are battle-weary. Your armor is scanty and your countenance is loathsome; you tire of the swords flicking at your neck. But you have a duty. There is nothing you can't take. (Content warning: Violence, implied adult themes,...

These are games where you play a detective or someone else investigating a mystery. Most of them are realistic games which I am splitting off of my realistic list. Some are more magical or science fi-ish.

So many text-adventure games have been written with some version of ZIL or Inform or TADS that we might forget other methods get used too. So, here is a list of noteworthy games which don't live on a Z-Machine or a TADS VM. By...
Games with graphics and/or sound by eyesack
I couldn't find an easy way to search for this, so I figured I'd ask the hivemind: What games use graphics and/or sound to enhance the gameplay, similar to City of Secrets and Necrotic Drift?
Games featuring music by Karl Ove Hufthammer
I have always thought that music has a huge potential for enhancing IF, more so than graphics has. So what are the best examples of IF games that use music? Note that this poll does not include games with only sound effects; they have to...
