Things are not going well in the kingdom of Ustaria. Of late, King Ansellus—known throughout the lands as a just and kind ruler—has become a bloodthirsty tyrant, behaving erratically and sending scores of his subjects to meaningless deaths.

His behavior has shocked everyone, but few more than Serrill, a powerful mage, one of the kingdom's most accomplished exorcists, and Ansellus' long-ago lover.
