Not a bad little tutorial, December 23, 2011
by Hanon Ondricek (United States)

Just as it says, this is a short tutorial game about being lost at sea that would be a good example game for new players. The player is guided the entire way through.

The only niggle is the last action in the game (Spoiler - click to show)PICK UP THE GLOBAL CELLPHONE is not spelled out, and synonyms PHONE, CELL, CELLPHONE do not seem to work. Perhaps the point is to get new players adjusted to guess-the-noun puzzlery?

Note: this rating is not included in the game's average.

I would guess that guess-the-noun puzzlery is something that we want to avoid, and in a tutorial, this should be explained. There are lots of ways to do this with the regular expression feature, whether the player gets it right at first or not.

I think this game could use a bit more beta testing (and a second release) to scope out how it teaches things, but I think it does some things well. I mean, I was unable to (Spoiler - click to show)hint, help, about (for instance, to mail suggestions to the author on how to tweak things) or credits and had no clue to that. And usually those are pretty useful. I also found (Spoiler - click to show)that I got the "a bench is here" message without seeing it which was kind of disruptive. But I think the general idea of giving points for learning basic commands is good. It can be done without insulting the player. Even if I was utterly baffled by how to pick up the cell phone.

And I think we need more games that try this sort of thing, so people aren't intimidated by IF.
