Baf's Guide

Amusing little adult interactive fiction game with the emphasis more on the puzzle-solving and less on the sexual aspects that more than often bog down this genre. A limited parser and some guess the verb issues aside, this was well worth playing although the subject matter is unlikely to appeal to everyone.

Review of Work Modified by Despoiler in 2002, August 24, 2010

I did not play the original c64 version written by R.W.Fisher and D.W.J.Sarhan but a modified version by Despoiler in 2002 who ported it to Z-code. There are some differences between these two versions but nothing that is significant when it comes to completing the work.

The overall game satisfied my prurient interest and the novelty of the subject matter, based on the farmer's daughter themed jokes, kept me interested in it long enough to complete it. The writing was adequate for the subject matter but at times seemed uninspired and perfunctory especially when dealing with non-sexual imagery. This could be a byproduct of the porting of the original as Despoiler did make modifications many years after it was first written.

There were a lot of puzzles but they were very easy, or easy to accidentally, solve. In terms of difficulty, I would rate them novice. There is no forgiveness for mistakes though and there may be times when you find yourself having to restore or restart. However, it's a short work and you can easily spend nearly as much time dealing with the ending as you did getting there.

There is no easy way to determine the range of commands available in the work other than to experiment. Some of the more common IF commands are available but you may become frustrated at times looking for the right phrase. I did enjoy this aspect of the work as there are little gems to discover throughout the work that might normally be skipped. This gives it a nice little replay value. If you enjoy, or at least can tolerate, the subject matter.
