The Inclusive "Little Match Girl" Narratology

Recommendations by jsnlv (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA)

Trying to put the games in Ryan Veeder's "Little Match Girl" interactive-fiction-universe in chronological order doesn't really work; since these are stories about time travel, it's possible that one game will take place before, during, and after another. Instead, let's put them in the order most appropriate to the perspectives of the characters we follow. Ryan may list most of these games on his LMG page on his website, but we'll try to provide an even more complete list of qualifying games.

1. The Little Match Girl, by Hans Christian Andersen
by Ryan Veeder
(2021)
Average member rating: (30 ratings)

jsnlv says:

This is the unambiguous beginning of the story.

2. How the Little Match Girl Got Her Colt Paterson Revolver, and Taught a Virtue to a Goblin
by Ryan Veeder
(2023)
Average member rating: (13 ratings)

jsnlv says:

This little side-story marked the second time that Ryan made a game in the LMG universe for EnigMarch, but it tells an earlier chapter in the life of that little girl.

3. The Little Match Girl at the Battle of the Gray Peaks
by Ryan Veeder
(2024)
Average member rating: (8 ratings)

jsnlv says:

This is basically one extended logic puzzle. It's still pretty small, though.

4. The Little Match Girl in the Court of Maal Dweb
by Ryan Veeder
(2024)
Average member rating: (13 ratings)

jsnlv says:

This little side-story might be my favorite game in the entire series. It's spooky!

5. How the Little Match Girl Met the Queen of Vampires
by Ryan Veeder
(2023)
Average member rating: (7 ratings)

jsnlv says:

Another side-story from EnigMarch, so it's again focused on specific puzzle mechanics.

6. The Little Match Girl 2: Annus Evertens
by Ryan Veeder
(2022)
Average member rating: (18 ratings)

jsnlv says:

This may be the second game in the series, but at the time of writing, five games precede it in narrative sequence.

7. How the Little Match Girl Came to Learn the Code of Poseidon
by Ryan Veeder
(2026)
Average member rating: (2 ratings)

jsnlv says:

A little game about hanging out with friends! Nothing could go wrong with that.

8. The Little Match Girl 3: The Escalus Manifold
by Ryan Veeder
(2023)
Average member rating: (14 ratings)

jsnlv says:

It's the third numbered game, finally! It's another one with unusual game systems you don't often find in interactive fiction!

9. The Little Match Girl and His Holiness Pope Pius IX
by Ryan Veeder
(2024)
Average member rating: (5 ratings)

jsnlv says:

This is a side-story, but it's not as tiny as the EnigMarch games usually are. It's IFComp-sized. (Probably best to play the in-browser version of Ryan's website for this one.)

10. The Little Match Girl and Her Friend, the Crow
by Ryan Veeder
(2023)
Average member rating: (9 ratings)

jsnlv says:

Some players may find it more rewarding to play this game after playing LMG4 (below). If you're the type of player who enjoys trying to figure out enigmatic situations that are later clarified with flashbacks, you might be such a player.

11. The Little Match Girl 4: Crown of Pearls
by Ryan Veeder
(2023)
Average member rating: (32 ratings)

jsnlv says:

The plot threads connecting to the preceding and following LMG games is more pronounced in this part of the list.

12. The Board of Regents, by Ryan Veeder (2025)
Average member rating: (2 ratings)
jsnlv says:

WE INTERRUPT YOUR REGULAR SCHEDULE OF GAMES FEATURING CHARACTERS YOU KNOW to set up extra background for someone who appears in a later game. (This might predate LMG4, but it's difficult to say that with any certainty.)

13. Stooping to Diplomacy, by Ryan Veeder (2026)
jsnlv says:

The previous tangential background game now has a sequel of its own. The spin-offs are getting spin-offs! (Again, this might predate LMG4. I think it makes sense here, though.)

14. The Little Match Girl against the Universal Sisterhood of Naughty Little Girls
by Ryan Veeder
(2023)
Average member rating: (8 ratings)

jsnlv says:

Less of a side-story than an epilogue to LMG4 (several positions above this).

15. The Little Match Girl Approaches the Golden Firmament
by Ryan Veeder
(2025)
Average member rating: (9 ratings)

jsnlv says:

This one's in real time! Another one to play on Ryan's website, if at all possible.

16. The Little Match Girl 5: The Hunter's Vow
by Ryan Veeder
(2024)
Average member rating: (11 ratings)

jsnlv says:

This is probably not the best Little Match Girl game to start with. Probably play at least 1 through 4 before trying this one.
