dis(re)pair

by Gaétan Darquié; Agathe Raymond-Carlo

2014

About the Story

Dis(re)pair is a bilingual web application (French/English) available online at http://interlivre.fr/disrepair/english.html which combines music, animation and text. The narrative is composed of 4 chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. The reader can interact with the story by clicking on the screen and by writing commands that the character will execute in chapter 4: these are choices that influence the evolution of the story.
A presentation video of the project is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gtp7cbsm5KU. English subtitles are provided.
The story is composed of 6 parts (introduction, 4 chapters and the conclusion). Most of these parts begin with a title screen where the chapter’s title and a quote appear. They are followed by an animated letter about a break-up, appearing letter by letter and randomly chosen from the 3 letters available for the chapter. Then the main text of the chapter is played: generally, the text is cut into 4 short fragments on which the reader has to click to linearly move forward in the text, music evolving according to the reader’s progress. However, the story proposes other types of interaction: in the introduction, the reader has to wait if he wants to read the whole text, in chapter 3 he moves from one illustrated text to

another by clicking on numbers from 1 to 9 and finally, in chapter 4 (written with the language Inform 7) the reader directly enters the commands to influence the character’s actions.
This fourth chapter is actually a complete story within the story as it has more than 40,000 characters, more than 20 different endings, numerous secrets and alternative paths to discover.
