In the Golden Years, when the mighty gods dwelt upon Olympus, Polydectes, king of the land known as Seriphos, wished to marry Danae, but Perseus defended his unwilling mother and prevented the match being made. Anxious to be rid of the youth, the king demanded the gift of a horse from all his subjects .. urged on by the knowledge that Perseus had no recourse to such a beast and sure that this would lead to his downfall.
Sure enough Perseus had no horse and in a moment of rashness offered the king anything else he might desire. Knowing full well that no man had ever returned from visiting the terrible sisters, the king asked for the head of MEDUSA - a Gorgon. The youth had no option other than to accept the challenge.
So it was that Perseus set forth on his quest for the head of a Gorgon, but not before he visited the temples of ATHENE and HERMES in order to make 'offerings' and to seek their blessings for his journey .....
