In this game, you see a graphical image of 2 hands, and you have to type in the number of fingers you see.

You're mostly right but missing a bit of context here and the 3rd ending that allows the game to make sense. Most of Melvin's fingertips games involve formal experimentation and are based on children's riddles. This one generates a different pair of ASCII hands each time, and like the children's game, you fail if you count the thumb as a finger.
Just like the fingertips songs, in isolation it's of limited interest, but in the context of a larger album of games it works as a brief mini-game.
