Punjab, 1947. A new border is drawn, and millions of families have days to leave the only homes they have known. The trains are the last way out.
The Last Train Home is a free interactive story in five chapters, played in your browser on phone or desktop. Each chapter follows a different person: a boy trying to keep his little sister safe on the last train east, a Muslim girl on a train heading the other way, families searching the lists of names at the crossing, a Sikh railway guard, and Amina decades later. Your choices decide who makes it, and your endings carry from one chapter to the next. Fifteen endings in all.
The story is fiction, set against real events. A companion page covers the history: the refugee trains, the Radcliffe Line, the camps and the survivors.
Content note: Chapter 1 contains loss and separation. Chapters 2 to 5 are for adults (18+) and contain graphic violence, blood and death. No community is portrayed as the aggressor.
