The writing of The Warren is consistent and evocative. I would recommend it for those who enjoy fairy-tales and stories centering around animal societies.
(Spoiler - click to show)Of the endings, I think the choice to leave the burrow will feel the most familiar to readers of the aforementioned animal society genre. I think this ending mirrors the first chapters of many similar stories.
The second ending, the choice to stay, is more interesting to me, possibly due to its unexpectedness. The ending passage is comprised of two paragraphs. The contents of the first, as I understand it, change slightly depending on which dreams you saw. The contents of the second are static:
"Nothing in your situation has changed, exactly, but now you're here by your own choice. You no longer feel pulled into a million pieces by all the things you could have been. You are where you belong, and in knowing that, there is peace."
I'm not sure if I'm convinced by this ending. This conclusion is both simple and total. To believe in this ending, I would have to believe in the confidence of the main character (or, perhaps, in myself, for picking this option.) I don't think I do.
