An interesting ride, December 18, 2012

This adventure takes you from a celebrity party to the moon to a beach in a distant space station. It is at moments beautiful, heart-rending, and frustrating to work your way though. Probably the worst thing I can say about it is that I found it at times over-wrought, but in another way this is also Moonlight's most endearing feature.

You get the feeling as you make your way through it that it truly, deeply, mattered to the author. That some moments and points were so important to him that he couldn't help but over do it. You can almost imagine, if it were hand written, some passages in thick ink pressed down so deep it gauges the paper and that then the author went back through and underlined and circled and drew arrows as though terrified the passage would be missed or lost.

In a sense, yes, this suggests a lack of confidence in the reader. But in another sense it shows just how much the author cared. Too often I find authors try so hard to be remote and subtle that they seem almost afraid to say anything at all. That is one thing you certainly could not say about Moonlight.

Everyone should play/read through it at least once. I can't guarantee you'll always understand it or even that you'll like it. But odds are good that at least one moment will stick with you, even after you've finished with it. It will stay with you after you've finished puzzling over the game and have shrugged your shoulders. That one moment, whatever your moment in the text is, will make it worth the confusion.

If you enjoyed Moonlight...
