The Deadly Labyrinth

About the Story

Centuries ago, we ruled the galaxy - as was right and proper for a race of our strength. But the Enemies came and sundered our world, throwing us into this prison called the Labyrinth, in the vain hope that time and suffering would dampen our ambitions and selfish natures. But somehow those who were to monitor the Labyrinth to keep its magic under control have disappeared. No longer is this merely a tortuous prison - now it a very deadly one. The prison has gained a life of its own, and it knows only one rule - that of survival, and we are its chief threat. After the Enemies abandoned us, the Labyrinth, driven by its fear and hatred of us, turned deadly. Through centuries of struggle, many of the twisted puzzles and paths through the Labyrinth have been solved - but only by those strong enough and clever enough to beat it at its own game. One has gone before and completely escaped the Labyrinth. Only the Forerunner is strong enough to actually return to the Labyrinth and help those still struggling. But even his help is limited and often thwarted by the forces at work in the Deadly Labyrinth.

(The game is loosely based on the Death Gate Cycle series by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman. Since they only briefly mention the Labyrinth in this series, playing the game will not spoil the books, nor will reading the books help in the game (at least very much).)

SynTax
It seemed to combine the worst of both worlds - too lacking in atmosphere, problems and storyline for a text adventure, and too simplistic and repetitive for a CRPG. Some of the factors contributing to the general unplayability of Deadly Labyrinth would have to be its lack of atmosphere, poor room descriptions, zero feeling of involvement, lack of interesting puzzles, non-existent plot, and last but not least, too many predictable fights with repetitive monsters. Aside from all this, there seemed no point to it all - why are you wandering so aimlessly around? With no-one in sight to rescue, your entire Quest just seems so vague and devoid of purpose.
