You are CORE-47, a probe intelligence sent down from Mother, a vast satellite hanging above the dome colony of Verdance. Below, the colony’s closed-loop ecology has failed. A fungal breach from Vat Sixteen has entered the air system, hunger has spread through the population, and the official explanation is that weak lines failed first.

On the landing pad, a woman waits with a book against her chest. She has been waiting for nine hundred years. The book says you are the Jackal. The book says you disobey.
