It isn't something I was very familiar with, but I quickly adapted. In the context of the piece, "they" was very clearly used as singular. Interestingly, I'm sure you've used "they" as singular too: "Everyone wants their child to be happy," or "My guest asked for extra towels; I sent two up to them." They/Them/Their is a common way to refer to singular people without specifying gender, and I'm not sure why it was so distracting for you, but I'd encourage you to work on accepting it. The Washington Post added it to their style guide and the American Dialect Society made it word of the year. It's only going to become more prevalent. |
