About the Story

First released in 2004 by Torn’s founder Joe Chedburn, Torn was one of the first massively multiplayer text-based online RPGs of its kind.

Joe is still an active part of the 12 strong design and development team committed to developing great new content and awesome features.

The aim of the game is simple. Create your character to infinite strengths and abilities in Torn City, a gritty crime based virtual world.

Torn is a long-term endeavour. There's no quick routes to the top.

Since Torn is text-based there are very few graphics which means it’s never outdated but the content is deep and will keep you entertained for years. Yes, years!

Many residents of Torn City have been playing for over 5 years, which is testament to constant feature releases and depth of the game.

You play it your way. You choose the path you want your character to take.

Want to be a master criminal, making money from crime, or a high flyer looking to build your next corporate empire and recruit other players to work for your business? There’s so many ways to make (and lose) money in Torn and some seriously bad people who’ll do anything to stop you.

Become stronger by training in one of the 30+ city gyms. Unlock new gyms as you progress or specialist gyms if you’re looking to train a certain stat.

Attack other players, trade valuable items with others, create factions and own territories within the city. Modify and race cars at the illegal street circuits within the city. Invite enemies to play Russian roulette or put a bounty of their head if they’re getting too big for their boots.

Torn is a long-term strategic game. With no-resets and 100’s of new players becoming Torn City residents each day there’s always plenty of people to compete against at the same level.

With an awesome community, active forums and active new player chat channel; there really is no better time to visit Torn City.

Besides... it’s 100% free to play. What have you got to lose?

Best crime themed RPG, January 12, 2021

TORN is the world's largest text-based online RPG.

Torn embarks you on a simple yet surprisingly addictive text-based role-playing adventure. The game takes you to a virtual world of Torn City where crime and violence are a way of life.

It generally follows the standard formula for most crime-themed IF games where you start your journey as a low-level street criminal until you become the master of your own craft. Achieving such social stature though will require extreme hard work, patience, and perseverance. If you think you have what it takes to rule this corrupt city, feel free to explore this game and see how far you can go.

Please be mindful that Torn is not the kind of game that you can finish in one sitting. In fact, this game has no limits and it can run infinitely. Testiment to the 10's of thousands of daily active players, many of which have been playing for 10+ years!

Torn requires a long-term engagement due to its real-time progression and while most MMORPGs today are embracing fast-paced gameplay and automated features, Torn remained faithful to its root. It demands heavy grinding to earn the resources required to progress. Unlike other RPGs where you can simply skip all NPC conversations, Torn requires you to read and respond to every text-based interactions.

Every decision you make will change your path in the game and it is very crucial to pay attention to every detail. You might end up becoming a powerful faction leader, a kingpin, a successful business tycoon, and much more.

There are numerous ways to earn money in TORN, known as Torn City Dollars ($TCD). You choose the type of character and path you want to take.

From the legit route of earning a wage, stock investments, owning businesses and property to the "less-legit" route of crime which could see you gambling in city's casinos, kidnapping, competing in faction wars, racing stolen cars and claiming bounties on other players heads.

The list of paths and outcomes are endless.

Available to play on any device with a browser (www.TORN.com), also available from Google Play for Android app.

Hardly Fiction, January 11, 2017

Torn is a grindy stat-crunching slog. It's dull flavor text papered over a pile of numbers. It's "fiction" only in the sense that the website has a fictive atmosphere, but no real narrative is possible. I don't think this game offers the kind of fun most IF players are looking for.

Stay away!, May 27, 2019

The admin of this game treat players like crap, even those who pay for a monthly donor pack. Has so many bs rules that it make the game worthless. Would love to meet the devs to show them what it's really like to be beaten and left in the streets.

I'm looking for games that are similar to gun mute and, amist the saige brush and cactus, might be butchering that final title.
